Experience

For over 25 years, Joy has emphasized the spiritual dimensions of mental and physical health in her private counseling and consulting practice. She counsels people with anxiety, depression and a wide variety of life challenges, including many with chronic and life threatening illnesses. Her work is solution focused and emphasizes care of the mind, body and soul, and the creation of a balanced satisfying life. Through her counseling, presentations and workshops, Joy inspires people to make healthy choices and to live purposeful lives based on higher principles. She is former director of Group Health Cooperative’s Biofeedback/Stress Management Program and has served as a health educator and consultant in a variety of public, business and medical settings.

After surviving a serious illness, she changed her focus from chemistry and physics to the study of human development and consciousness. In 1985, she received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Washington. Joy has had a lifelong interest in the integration of ancient truths into everyday life and has traveled widely in order to study different mind/body/spirit approaches.

In addition to being an ecumenical spiritual director in the Christian tradition, she has extensive experience with other major religions, and is a certified cross-cultural communication specialist. She deeply respects a person’s faith and right to follow, or not follow, any particular tradition. Since 1997, Joy has organized and facilitated numerous interfaith educational and dialogue programs.

5 universal laws of joy
  1. We can never, ever change any one else.
  2. We can recognize, understand and override our own reactive patterns.
  3. When we change ourselves, we will influence the situations in our lives.
  4. Every individual has an enormous potential for good.
  5. If we work for a larger good (fairness, mutual respect, etc.) we are happier and more effective than when we just react or focus on what we don't like or want.
