The Spiritual Dimensions of Health & Well Being

Medical research now supports what many people have always believed. Growing amounts of research data show that “spirit” seems to play an important part of health and healing. Common complaints such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, or being too busy or stressed to do things that bring joy into one’s life may, in fact, have an unrecognized spiritual basis. Assess your own spiritual health and consider how this may be influencing your physical and emotional health. Learn how to honor your heart’s wisdom and to develop a healthy spiritual immune system. Explore ways to share your gifts more freely, to embody your higher ideals more fully, to access your inner wisdom and to embrace the sacredness of life. This seminar honors the unique experience of each individual, and people from all backgrounds are welcome.

For over 20 years, Joy has emphasized the spiritual dimensions of mental and physical health in her private counseling and consulting practice. She counsels people with chronic and life threatening illnesses, and gives many types of workshops that focus on care of the mind, body and soul. She is former director of Group Health Cooperative’s Biofeedback/Stress Management Program and has served as a health educator and consultant in a variety of public, business and medical settings. She has traveled widely and studied several mind/body/spirit approaches. Besides being an ecumenical spiritual director in the Christian tradition, she has lived and studied in Buddhist, Hindu, Native American, and Islamic communities.
.

(Joy has had a lifelong interest in the integration of ancient truths in everyday life. After surviving a serious illness, she changed her focus from chemistry and physics to the study of human development and consciousness. In 1985, she received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Washington. Her doctoral research compared the beliefs and values of religious groups. She was on the faculty at BCC for many years.)

5 universal laws of joy
  1. We can never, ever change any one else.
  2. We can recognize, understand and override our own reactive patterns.
  3. When we change ourselves, we will influence the situations in our lives.
  4. Every individual has an enormous potential for good.
  5. If we work for a larger good (fairness, mutual respect, etc.) we are happier and more effective than when we just react or focus on what we don't like or want.
