The Spiritual Dimensions of Depression

The World Health Organization estimates that by year 2020, major depression will be the second leading cause of disease and injury in the world. Last year’s president of the American Psychological Society, Martin Seligman, tells us that “the rates of depression among young people have never been higher. The mean age of onset has gone from 30 to 15. It’s no longer a middle aged housewife’s disorder. It’s a teen-ager’s disorder”. It’s causes are generally complex and illusive. When the spiritual dimension is a contributing factor, it is rarely recognized or treated.

This session provides a rationale for re-considering what it means to be a fully functioning human being, and provides a simple model for exploring both spiritual dis-ease and healthy spiritual development. Participants will receive information and tools that will enable them to playfully assess the state of their own spiritual immune system. They will have an opportunity to identify “spiritual nutrients” that could reduce unwanted stress and increase well being, balance and harmony into their lives.

Topics will include…

5 universal laws of joy
  1. We can never, ever change any one else.
  2. We can recognize, understand and override our own reactive patterns.
  3. When we change ourselves, we will influence the situations in our lives.
  4. Every individual has an enormous potential for good.
  5. If we work for a larger good (fairness, mutual respect, etc.) we are happier and more effective than when we just react or focus on what we don't like or want.
